Fees & Charges

Fees chart

It doesn't matter how big or small a load is when visiting an EcoDepot; loads are weighed at the kiosk on entry and the type of load is identified, with the exception of household loads of green only. Vehicles are then weighed again when leaving. The difference is the net weight and that is what the customer is then charged for. See the following chart with load types and the fee charged.

Please note:
With the exception of green, all vehicles are weighed and charged on the net weight of material being disposed of.
To reduce delays and queues, household loads containing only green are charged at a fixed fee per vehicle. Customers may ask to be charged by weight if they wish. It is not possible to change your decision to a fixed fee to a fee based on weight after you have passed over the entry weighbridge, or vice versa.

Why different fees?

The fee structure is designed to encourage people to sort their waste. When waste is sorted, valuable resources can be kept out of our landfills. It is also more expensive to transport (to Kate Valley in Waipara) and dispose of refuse than it is to process other types of material. The most expensive fee is for unsorted general refuse; the lowest fee is for hardfill.

How to reduce your fees

Residents can keep the cost of taking material to the EcoDepot down by:

  • Sorting out items that may be recycled or reused. These can be left behind at the recycling drop-off before you arrive at the kiosk.
  • Sorting out refuse, and dropping off separated waste at the EcoDepots. If more than half of the load is green that can be easily separated at the EcoDepots, there will be a reduction in the fees charged (see fee chart above). Remember, the items placed on/in your vehicle last are the first taken off at the EcoDepots.
  • Using the commercial waste collectors that provide a discount for separated materials (e.g. separated green collection services).
  • Home composting

What are the fees used for?

The fees charged at the EcoDepots are designed to cover the processing, transport and disposal costs of the refuse.
The fee charged to dispose of green has been set below the general refuse fee to encourage people to sort their waste and keep organic green out of the landfill.
