Acceptable Materials

When sorting your load, take into account the facilities provided at all EcoDepots. Make sure it can easily be separated, then a visit to the EcoDepot will be cheaper and rewarding knowing you are being Wastewise. Remember the last item on the trailer is the first off.


Recycling

The recycling centre accepts:

  • All items that can be placed out for recycling at the kerbside . If you have too much for the green crate after a party etc., simply take it along to the recycling centre.no charge.
  • All reusable household items and appliances for resale in the Supershed.

Staff reserve the right to decline items if there is no demand or no resale value. Items refused can be taken through to the EcoDepot for disposal at a cost.


Household hazardous waste drop-off centre

Located next to the recycling centre for the disposal of all domestic items that could have long term environmental effects. Hazardous waste disposal experts will manage the waste dropped off. Click here for location.

Please notify a staff member when you arrive at the drop off centre, this is so any hazardous waste can be sorted and correctly stored.

Please give staff as much information as possible so that they can clearly identify the substance - if possible, leave the substance in its original container.

Accepted items:

  • Used Oil / automotive liquids
  • Car batteries
  • Old gas cylinders
  • Liquid chemicals
  • Dry chemicals
  • Household Cleaners
  • Paints and solvents
  • Old refrigerators/freezers
  • Old garden herbicides
  • Garden pesticides

If you live outside the Christchurch City area you can contact the Hazardous Waste Advisory Service for advice. The Hazardous Waste Advisory Service works with Local and District Councils to help manage the disposal of hazardous waste.

The following are NOT accepted at EcoDepots:

  • Hazardous waste from any business
  • Pharmaceuticals (surplus pills, medicines etc should be returned to the issuing pharmacy)
  • Ammunition (contact the Police Arms Office)
  • Explosives and flares
  • Asbestos and products containing asbestos

Green / Composting area

Garden green material that has been separated from other waste can be dropped off at any of the EcoDepots for a reduced fee. This green matter is shredded and composted for around 12 weeks by City Care Ltd, in an open air windrow system, at Metro EcoDepot. The compost is then sold to Living Earth Ltd for screening, blending and marketing.

Hardfill area

Click here for location. A fee is charged for dumping hardfill, and the hardfill is kept separate from the refuse tip and used to rehabilitate the landfill.


Tyre bay

General refuse

Click here for location. This refuse is compacted and sent to the landfill and is charged for accordingly.

Hazardous Waste

If a product is corrosive, flammable, reactive, or toxic it can be hazardous.
Everyday products such as paints, cleaners, and batteries can actually pose a hazard to our health and environment. These household items and all commercial or large quantities of hazardous waste and special waste need special handling consideration and must be disposed of safely.
