About
us
In June 2005 Meta NZ Ltd took over operation of Christchurch's three refuse
stations, with the intention of moving their focus away from the traditional
disposal of refuse, and further towards recovery of resources. The new,
more positive name better represents the innovative vision of process
and recovery that the EcoDepots are all about. Now, when you have material
you no longer want or need, youll be taking it to an EcoDepot.
The EcoDepots are places where waste is reworked; everything you bring
into them is sorted, processed and transported elsewhere. Reusable items
go to the SuperShed, recyclables (e.g. scrap metal or timber) go to other
processors, and green is taken to Metro where it is composted before being
passed onto a local company for marketing. Refuse, of course, is transported
to Kate Valley, where it is disposed of in the landfill.
To fully utilise our existing resources, protect future resources and
minimise the size of landfill it is important that only what can truly
not be reused in any other way goes into the refuse pit. The EcoDepots
are committed to recovering anything possible.
The way the EcoDepots operate and how they are designed will change significantly
in coming months and years. Before, you just took your waste
to the dump and dropped it off what happened to it then was someone
elses problem. But at the EcoDepots the emphasis is going to change
towards reuse, recycling and recovery, and that will be something that
everyone will be responsible for.
Already you can drop off recyclables before the weighbridge, and you pay
less to drop off sorted green than to dispose of refuse, but the categories
of reusable or recyclable materials before the refuse pit will gradually
increase. Your efforts to sort reusable or recyclable material out, rather
than dispose of it in the pit, will be rewarded because you will pay less
in disposal charges.
We plan to make a practical change for the better, and that will help
us all to change how we think about waste and what we do with it. Together
we can find real solutions to Christchurchs waste problems.
